The Jaguar spirit is here
Discovering it in nature, the F-Type’s filiation with the E-Type translates into some pronounced styling effects: inwardly curved stern, horizontal taillights, gaping grille… The neo-retro influence is very present in this typical roadster architecture (long bonnet, rear driver’s seat).
Just as evocative as the dress, the cockpit heralds the colour. Curiously, we find ourselves rather crammed into this not so compact size (4.47 meters long, barely 2 cm less than a 911, and 1.88 meters wide). Passenger grab handle, an aviation-style Sport mode button, stitched leathers that are omnipresent on our version… The work is done, even if the layout is a bit messy. Too many buttons, scattered here and there. With the top down (in 12 seconds), the 340-hp V6 engine starts up with a vengeance: Jaguar hadn’t gotten us used to such rage.
A melodious sound
Rough rushes, racing engine tone in the revs, throttle bounce and bang at the lift… This entry-level V6 is one of the good surprises in this F-Type. Under the nose, the imposing hood dent paves the way. The millimetre-adjusted driving position offers comfortable, well-calibrated damping for fast lanes and open-air vocalizations. Up to regulation speeds, swirls are kept under control.
By increasing the pace, the balance and rigidity of the package (50/50) are tarnished by a slightly too soft suspension and inconsistent steering around the midpoint. As a result, the front end tends to follow the unevenness of the road surface. Not very engaging at high speed…
We’ll therefore prefer to adopt a more fluid pace, served by the smooth and responsive ZF 8-speed automatic transmission (the only transmission available for the moment), to reach the Navarra circuit. There, we discover the mid-range V6 S (380 hp). In the end, the difference is not so obvious in hand. The 0 to 100 km/h is increasing (4.9 s vs. 5.3 s), but the barely higher torque (460 Nm vs. 450 Nm at 3,500 rpm) does not imply better accelerations.
It’s a pity, because on this track that alternates fast phases and more technical passages, the controlled suspension and the self-locking differential bring a real benefit in terms of sportiness.
